In 2009 local author, Freda Cruse Phillips’ released Voices of Our People, featuring 52 interviews of local citizens, her newest book, Places of Our People featuring stories of the people and places of the Ozarks White River Valley was released May 20th. Available locally at Hasting Bookstores in Batesville and Mtn Home, in Mtn View at Country Time Restaurant, Mellon’s Country Store, Wallace Woodworks, Tommy’s Famous Pizza, T & A Framing, Ozark Folk Center, Angler's, Woods and Valero. Also available at Calico Rock Visitors Center and Chamber of Commerce. Phillips is scheduled for book signings June 11th, 12-2 Hastings Mtn Home and Sat June 18th 1-3 Hastings Batesville. Phillips is a feature writer for Eye on Independence magazine, Ozark Regional Magazine and Stone County Citizen and White River Current newspapers focusing on local history with people and places of the White River Valley. Phillips is a member of the Exploring Izard County Crew - a number of the excursions of the EIC are featured in the book.

St. James, Ar, named for Jesse James gang who frequented the area following the Civil War, home to the Younger family; Mark Twains' photos of cousin Tom Teague at Fifty Six, Civil war stories of the Burning of Rorie's Mill, tortured, mutilation and killing of Absalom Rorie and his two sons to protect the munitions efforts on the Sylamore, now Gunner Pool in the Ozark National Forest, the Lafferty Settlement of the Buckhorn in 1797 (land patent applied for in 1810), Riggsville and other stories....

About the Author

Freda Cruse Phillips

Was born and grew up in the White River Valley of the Ozarks present day Mountain View and Stone County. She comes from a line of Indians and outlaws including bootleggers, moonshiners and Indian Chiefs. She graduated High School from Mountain View and then went to the University of California San Diego graduating in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts with a triple major in English, American Literature, and Sociology. She then earned graduate degrees both a Master’s and PhD in Social Psychology. After completing her undergraduate and graduate degrees she joined Jack D. Douglas in coauthoring Creative Interviewing and Love Intimacy and Sex. Also during this time she began her studies in photography studying under World Acclaimed photographer Richard Avedon. It would take over 13 years for her to return to her beloved Ozarks White River Valley and Stone County. She returned home to be with her family putting aside her writing and photography useing her formal education of sociology and psychology to work in the depart of Human Services Child Welfare division an often thankless position but one still dedicated to the protection and rights of our young people. It was during this time when Freda had a chance to travel extensively the area meeting people she began to formulate the idea of capturing the rich history of this area and make sure it is memorialized not just what is in the history books but the stories of these people why they came here the trials they endured during the frontier days and how the traditions we enjoy and celebrate today have come to be. This stirring within her had actually started a long time ago as her grandfather told her stories as young child of their family and the people who settled here neighbors and what makes up even today a unique and beautiful community So her we are today where Freda is releasing the second in a series of books the first being “Voices of Our People” and the second “Places of Our People” this series focuses on the people, places music, and stories of the people of this area the Ozarks and White River Valley.
