In 2009 local author, Freda Cruse Phillips’ released Voices of Our People, featuring 52 interviews of local citizens, her newest book, Places of Our People featuring stories of the people and places of the Ozarks White River Valley was released May 20th. Available locally at Hasting Bookstores in Batesville and Mtn Home, in Mtn View at Country Time Restaurant, Mellon’s Country Store, Wallace Woodworks, Tommy’s Famous Pizza, T & A Framing, Ozark Folk Center, Angler's, Woods and Valero. Also available at Calico Rock Visitors Center and Chamber of Commerce. Phillips is scheduled for book signings June 11th, 12-2 Hastings Mtn Home and Sat June 18th 1-3 Hastings Batesville. Phillips is a feature writer for Eye on Independence magazine, Ozark Regional Magazine and Stone County Citizen and White River Current newspapers focusing on local history with people and places of the White River Valley. Phillips is a member of the Exploring Izard County Crew - a number of the excursions of the EIC are featured in the book.
St. James, Ar, named for Jesse James gang who frequented the area following the Civil War, home to the Younger family; Mark Twains' photos of cousin Tom Teague at Fifty Six, Civil war stories of the Burning of Rorie's Mill, tortured, mutilation and killing of Absalom Rorie and his two sons to protect the munitions efforts on the Sylamore, now Gunner Pool in the Ozark National Forest, the Lafferty Settlement of the Buckhorn in 1797 (land patent applied for in 1810), Riggsville and other stories....
